making space in the summerLate summer is the perfect time to look through the seasonal items you know you won't be using. It’s also an ideal time to make sure they're in good enough condition to store away until the next warmer season arrives.

Renting a storage unit is a great option if you don't have enough space in your garage, attic, or shed to store unused stuff. These containers are ideal for storing seasonal items and will keep your home clear of stuff that isn't being used right now.

Things to Store During Summer Cleaning

1. Summer Clothes

Now is a wonderful time to get everything out of the closets and go through it before you start putting away all those new clothes for back to school. Check your summer wardrobe to find what still fits and what doesn't. Donate what you don't need and double-check that everything you do keep is clean, dry, and ready to store.

Folded garments should be stored in clear plastic containers or large plastic bags to keep them safe and easy to find when needed. Put a dryer sheet or a lavender sash in there to keep the clothes smelling fresh and not like they've been stored for the entire winter.

Wardrobe boxes can also be used to hold items that would otherwise be stored on hangers. It's also a good idea to double-check that all of your summer linens and drapes are clean, dry, and ready to store.

2. Patio Furniture

It's time to put your patio furniture away once you've cleaned it. Lightweight chairs should be stacked seat-to-seat, while other forms of furniture should not be stacked on top of each other to avoid warping. Dust coverings can also be used to protect patio furniture while being stored.

3. Bikes, Canoes, and Other Equipment

Before storing your outdoor gear, wipe everything down and make sure it's dry. While they're being stored, you don't want mold or mildew to grow.

Make sure to cover these items when storing them, especially if they are stored inside. This will help protect any rubber or foam materials from being damaged. If these goods are stored on the ground, they will not break if they fall over.

4. Lawnmower and Other Lawn Care

The winter months have less lawn care. This means you can clean and cover your lawnmower, giving both it and yourself a break.

Check that the gas tank on the lawn mower and any other gas-powered maintenance items is empty. Wipe them all down, so they're ready for next spring and summer.
